McCarthy Catalogue vol. I (Italian and Byzantine Illuminations)

I provided a number of addenda and corrigenda to vol. I of the McCarthy catalogue on pp. 348–50 of vol. III, and will record more here as I become aware of them. Contributions from readers are welcome.

  • No. 2. 9th/10th-cent. Lectionary leaf
    • Formerly Maggs Bros Ltd, European Bulletin No. 9: European Miniatures and  Illumination (1975), no. 4 (Italy, 10th century) [Added 7 July 2023].
    • A sister-leaf was in the Colker sale at Christie's, online sale 21173, 12 December 2022, lot 5. Archived here. [Added 11 April 2023]
      It was previously Maggs Bros Ltd, Catalogue 1002: Western Text Hands from the Late 9th to the Early 14th Century (London, 1980), no. 5 and pl. IV ("Italy, first half tenth century") [Added 7 July 2023].
  • No. 5. Initial 'H' from an Atlantic Bible

    • A previously unrecognised cutting of St Paul is Milan, Biblioteca Trivulziana, A. 54. The incipit is "Paulus apostolus post sui conuersionem multas persecutiones perpessus est ..."; the text continues on the verso. I owe my knowledge of it to the kindness of Beatrice Alai.
