I gave an entire lecture at Leeds this year devoted to the history of the Schoenberg Database in which I discussed Larry's well-meaning but misguided interventions at length. The good news is that the new data model for the Database allows for errors in "linking" to be rectified by UN-linking records if necessary. That doesn't repair the corrupt data, however - that has to be done manually with, as you say, reference to the source in question.
